Sunday Morning Worship

 ‘Sunday Morning Worship’ 2018.

Sunday Morning Worship (2018), is a single take video within a single take screen recording that is a reflection on my entirely embarrassing past experiences as a self-aware “crazy fangirl". I want to explore the absurdity of obsessive fan culture and the allusions it has to a digital age cult mentality.

There’s an absolute absurdity to the idea that some people’s immediate instinct is to scream when encountered by someone deemed “famous” or of celebrity stature. Therefore, for 5 minutes straight, I perform the crazy fangirl by screaming at the camera as though my favourite celebrity was directly in front of me. In this case – Hugh Jackman. And while Hugh Jackman is no Justin Bieber or One Direction – I believe it’s slightly more jarring to see a celebrity of an older demographic being fangirled over by a teenager... and who doesn’t love Hugh Jackman.

Furthermore, I incorporate a post-internet, anti-aesthetic style to the video to highlight the domination of the digital space and various social media as the predominant platforms where fans attempt to be recognised by their favourite celebrities. Incessantly using fan accounts to spam tweets, Insta Dm’s, and tagging them in posts are frequent rituals done by millions of fans on a daily basis; as though they are actually screaming over one another in attempt to be seen, recognised or heard.
