'The Way You Look', Tokyo, 2018.
Inspired by the constant fast pace of Tokyo city, ‘The Way You Look’ aims to cast a spotlight on the fleeting moments and brief interactions that occur between passer-by’s before, almost, never seeing each other again. This realisation is heightened within the context of being alone in foreign city where noticeable differences are emphasised through being unfamiliar with an areas’ ubiquitous style, ethnicities and physical appearances of people and faces. These variances represent one of the main differences between cities around the globe. Through my work I attempt to merge my desire to immortalise people I see within the realm of photographic portraiture in a way that is, visually, portrayed accurately through my only interaction with these individuals – fleeting, fuzzy and slightly blurred. Ultimately, the ironic mentality of being anonymous in a crowd is flipped as I voyeuristically capture Tokyo locals and its guests in an unaware crowd.
Through a blend of long exposure photography and the rapid movement of people walking through the frame, the resulting photographs are an abstract mess of distorted figures and flashes of colour that accurately embody the anxiety of being in a crowd.
